Mini-Mile-Anti-Sitting Challenge (ongoing, please join in!) - 2010/01/27 07:58
If you have seen the news lately, you know that those scientists (the bored ones, apparently, because who studies sitting? Seriously?) have discovered that even dedicated gym rats are at serious risk from sitting around the rest of the day. You can check out the article here: http://www.thirdage.com/long-life-tips/sitting-too-much-could-be-deadly
The advice? Get off your duff, and try not to sit for extended periods without breaking it up. Get moving!
Of course, we all know that moving more is always better anyway. More calories burned, more blood circulated, more oxygen utilized. Minus my killer workouts six days a week, I'm VERY sedentary during the day. Hunching over a canvas or a computer doesn't lead to a whole lot of movement in general. I'm pretty sure I've had to scrape moss off me.
So, here is the challenge:
7 days a week, walk a mile that is NOT a part of your workout, and is spaced at least 2 hours away from your workout. 1 mile is the minimum goal, more is even better - but any additional miles MUST be spaced out at least an hour from the time you finished the last one. You can NOT tack on additional miles together. The whole point of this is to break up activity throughout the day.
For the sake of competition (with yourself or others), if you are interested, here is a point system to keep track:
Any additional miles, should anyone be a serious over achiever, is worth only 1 additional point. Miles ONLY count if they are spaced a minimum of 1 hour apart, preferably 2 hours.
We will total out every Monday, and reset starting that day, and see who managed to snag the most points? For now, I think it'll be just for fun... but maybe if we get into this enough, I might start scouring around for some prizes.
So... Anyone game? We'll start this Monday, February 1st. ~Kyra

I'm in on this, (obviously! )
My goal is to hit at least 2 miles a day. Preferably more. I'd really like to be able to say I did 4, but I don't know how doable that'll be for me. Who knows? Maybe a lot more doable than I think! ~Kyra

Yep, just walking. Although, if someone wants to run the mile, I have no problem with that. Just no biking or rollerskating. Walk or run. ~Kyra

Hm, weather permitting I could probably do a mile on my lunch hour. Once the time changes I could do another in the evening. For now I'll say I'm in for 1 mile a day, starting tomorrow. I just cleaned out my desk, so I actually know where my pedometer is.

Poo. What if I skate 2 miles? Can I count that as 1 mile of walking?

Well, we can put it to a vote? A brisk, 4 MPH walk is 15 minutes, so I figure if you really have to bike or skate, a mile would have to equal 15 hard minutes. What do you think? ~Kyra

MMAS Challenge, Week of Feb 1st - 2010/02/01 08:37
I think any activity you engage in for about 15 minutes, at moderate intensity can count for the mile walk. So, rollerblading, biking, whatever - but 15 minutes worth seems fair.
So, I have a goal of a minimum 1 mile a day, 2 preferably, and 4 would be awesome!

I find this a bit humorous, or annoying, but my biggest roadblock to working out multiple times in the day has always been a desire to NOT end up sweaty all the darn time. I'd much rather get all sweaty ONCE, shower off, and feel fresh and clean all day long. This news about moving more is going to bite, even if it WILL be better for me all the way around.
I just knocked out my first mile today (later than I wanted, I think I'm going to have to push a rough schedule of a workout at 5AM, a walk at 9, 11:30, 1, and 3. I doubt I'll make all of those but that's my best bet at getting all of them in - and leaves the evening open for last minute miles if I fall behind.
But what I realized on my walk is that JUST walking is boring for me. It'd be fine if I was outside, and I totally plan on walking the dogs during this - but I need it to be a bit warmer. So, on the treadmill I find I just can't help but add in a minute or two here and there of running. I'm a runner... walking is "break time" to me, even though my intentions are to just walk.
...And then I end up all sweaty, although maybe I would have anyway at a 4MPH pace. I always seem to sweat at the drop of a hat (well, maybe two hats), when back when I was out of shape I didn't sweat at all. Yeesh.
I'm going to try walking the dog outside in the 16 degree weather and see if that doesn't actually become an incentive to head outside.
I can't be the only one that this bugs? Right? Or do you guys have some mysterious secret that keeps you fresh as a daisy no matter what? ~Kyra
